Up North {part 2}

We rolled up to de iles de Bucherville National Park, about 10km outside of Montreal.  The park was beautiful but the RV campground was just a cul-de-sac.  Luckily, there weren't many people there and we had an end spot.  It turned out to be kind of nice.

The first thing we did was hop on our bikes and take a tour of the park.  The park was actually a series of 5 islands that you could bike or boat around.

The biking trails were awesome.  Well made and totally flat.

We saw so much wildlife.  This is a fawn hiding in the grass.  Deer were everywhere as well as raccoon, opossum, groundhogs, birds and cute little mice

The mornings were nice and cool

Riding the bike ferry

There were several bridges that connected the islands

At one crossing, you had to take a ferry to get to the next island.

The boys and I getting off

Grady and Myles were out riding and Myles said he heard Grady say, "hey, watch this".  Famous last words.  He tried to do a wheelie on his beach cruiser.  He flipped off backwards, hit is head (yay for helmets) and got some pretty nasty road rash.  Myles came back to get me and I grabbed the bike with Emma's bike trailer.  I trailered him back to camp and patched him up.

The damage

We found out that Montreal is famous for its bagels (who knew?)
So, we, being bagel connoisseurs, had to check them out.

Our first stop was St. Viateur Bagel.  Apparently, bagels in Montreal are boiled in honey water so they are sweeter.

I don't know....I think I like American bagels better

Next, it was on to Jean Talon Market.  It is the largest and oldest market in Montreal.

It did not disappoint!  We tried all sorts of fruits and vegetables.

Amazing pizza

Cherries and Apricots

We went into Old Montreal and walked around the Basilica Notre Dame

Emma was fascinated with the "yellow lady".  She pretended to be a statue until you put money in her hat, then she juggled

Back at camp the boys tasted the prickly pear they bought at the market

Myles wasn't too thrilled

The next day, we went to a cool nature center call the Eco Zoo.  It was all native animals, most of which were being rehabilitated

Turkey

We watched a raven eat a duckling.  Pretty gruesome

An arctic fox

A monkey

Look at this funny porcupine

The following day we went to the Montreal Science Center.  Josh and I would have rather walked around the city but when traveling with kids we had to have a different agenda.

They had an entire exhibit about Dreamworks Animation

Myles loved trying his hand at being an animator

Emma just wanted to dress up

The Trolls

Josh watched Emma's puppet show

Myles created this weird guy

Magic

Is he floating in mid air?

Robot Scalas

We left Montreal and headed to Freeport, ME.  On the way, we stopped at a restaurant in a small town.  They only spoke french so ordering was pretty funny.  An adorable old lady in an apron helped us then ran in the back and made our food.  It was wonderful.

We arrived in Freeport and checked out the giant LL Bean store

In the fish tank

While the boys shopped, Emma played with the chalkboard in the kids section

Can you tell who she was missing? Sachi

We had to try the Whoopie Pies, a Maine staple

We were camping at Wolf Creek Farm.  It was a working farm that sustains itself by offering camping and other programs.

Campers were welcome to go into the barn at any time and checkout the animals.  We went several times a day.

Emma was done with taking photos

Checking out the chicks

Goats

The farm was on Cosco Bay.

The water was freezing

Emma enjoyed the mud

Dancing

We went into Portland and the kids found an awesome toy store

Our last night there the campground/farm offered a lobster roast.  We ordered two lobsters and one dinner.

Even Myles tried some lobster

Emma was terrified of the lobster

She did try it but spit it in the bushes

Finally, it was time to head home.  I think 2 weeks is my max time for a "vacation".  We were all ready to head home.  PS: don't give a crazy 5 year old markers in the car.  There is a chance she will use it as makeup.
